Overview

Zambezi River, the lifeline of Zambia
Zambezi River, the lifeline of Zambia

Zambia (official name: the Republic of Zambia) is a landlocked country located in the southern part of Africa. It shares its borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. It was formerly known as Northern Rhodesia. The present name of the country, Zambia, is derived from the Zambezi River. Zambia has a tropical climate and the terrain consists of high plateau with some hills and mountains. With an area of 290,566 sq. mi. (752,614 sq. km), it is the 39th-largest country in the world, and its population is 11,668,000 (2005).

Two river basins drain the Zambian lands: the Zambezi River basin (in the south) and the Congo River basin (in the north). Out of the two, the Zambezi River basin drains about 75% of the Zambian lands and plays a dominant role in the life and economy of Zambian people.

At least seventy-two distinct Bantu-speaking ethnic groups live in Zambia, but almost 90% of Zambians belong to the nine main ethno linguistic groups.

Start by adding a paragraph exactly as above: for example, copy (from the EDIT BOX) the heading "Nightlife" and the three lines below it, paste in below that section, and change "Nightlife" (in all three places) to your new subject. If it's great, add a snippet below the heading. Then click on the new link and start on the new page.
