Overview
Togo (official name: the Togolese Republic) is a country located in the western part of Africa. It shares its borders with Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso; and in the south, it has a short Gulf of Guinea coast, on which the capital Lomé is located.
With an area of 21,925 square miles (56,785 km²), Togo is a small country with a population (2005) of 6.1 million. About 51% of people of Togo follow indigenous African beliefs while 29% people are Christians. The remaining population follows Islam. Agriculture is the main economic activity and the country is generally self-sufficient in foodstuffs. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton are major exports.
