Overview
Salt Lake City is Utah's capital, the state's largest city and its cultural, ethnic, religious and commerical heart.
Located in northern Utah along the southeast shores of the Great Salt Lake, the city is best known as the home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which holds considerable political, commercial and cultural influence throughout the state.
Though Salt Lake City remains the location of the LDS church's headquarters (the phalic, 26-floor church headquarters building dominates the downtown skyline) the capital long ago "fell" to so-called Gentiles. Lured by job opportunities, low cost of living and the proximity to a number of world class ski resorts, non-Mormon folk far outnumber their non-secular bretheren within the city's footprint.
Influenced by conservative church congregants and leaders, Utah may indeed deserve its reputation as "The Reddest State in the Nation." Salt Lake City, on the other hand, isn't nearly as conservative as its commonly-held reputation. The city's brash and outspoken mayor, Rocky Anderson, is considered among the most liberal politicians in the nation. The city has a thriving counterculture, including one of the nation's biggest gay and lesbian populations.
