TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE: ENJOY ONE OF NEW YORK STATE'S SCENIC BYWAYS
If you’re planning to stay in a campground or RV park affiliated with Campground Owners of New York (CONY: http://www.nycampgrounds.com), it is likely located on or near one of New York State’s Scenic Byways. Once you’ve settled in your campsite, explored the grounds and checked out all the camper activities, come discover our beautiful state by way of…the Scenic Byways!
To get started, check out the New York State Department of Transportation’s detailed website about the state’s Scenic Byways at https://www.nysdot.gov/portal/page/portal/programs/scenic-byways. You can also check out designated America’s Byways® located in New York at the National Scenic Byways Program’s website at http://www.byways.org/explore/states/NY/. According to the NYS DOT, a scenic byway is a road, but not just a road. It’s a road with a story to tell. That story could be scenic, cultural, historical, natural, or all around entertaining and surprising. Across the state, there are three National Scenic Byways, 17 designated New York State Scenic Byways, 19 Parkways, and an abundance of scenic roads. There are also five Byways awaiting official designation. Designated signage dots the Byways, indicating the twists and turns of the roads making up the Byway, that will lead you to another “story” around the bend.
So what are those stories? To name just a few (and whet your interest for more)…
They are the stately lighthouses along the Great-Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway. The historic Erie Canal along the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway. The winding Delaware River and majestic Catskill Mountains along the Upper Delaware Byway. The charming hamlets and ocean scenery along the North Fork Trail Scenic Byway in eastern Long Island. The annual 50-mile yard sale along Scenic Route 90. The antiques communities and festivals along the Route 20 Scenic Byway. They are even the amusements along the Dude Ranch Trail, beginning and ending in Lake George.
And, you don’t have to just drive to enjoy the Byways. Many have sections with maintained shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians to use with care. So get out the bicycles or strap on the walking shoes to enjoy a more intimate connection with the passing scenery. Perhaps bring along your canoe or kayak, and launch into one of the waterways adjacent to the Byways.
Chances are, you’ll use the directions in the free CONY directory (800) 497-2669, or the website (http://www.nycampgrounds.com) to locate your campground or RV park, and will make your way to your camping destination by using the fast-paced thruways and highways to get there straightaway and start your vacation.
