Although the place is essentially an industrial one, yet there are some spots worth visiting around the city. There is Durgapur Barrage on the Damaodar river, and some nice retreats by the side of the river. A few hours journey would take you to Shantiniketan (that is, the abode of peace), a university founded by Rabindranath Tagore, a renowned writer, philosopher and painter and the first Noble Laureate of Asia. The Vishwabharati University complex in the serene environs of Shantiniketan is an experience of lifetime to savior where the time stands still and reminds you of the cultural heritage of India. From Durgapur, you may also plan an excursion to Bakreshwar where you may enjoy the hot water springs.
In case, you are interested in watching an integrated steel plant and steel manufacturing process, you may try to get an invitation to see the facilities at Durgapur Steel Plant. However, it is advisable to contact the plant authorities in advance.
