Democratic Republic of Congo/Image

Democratic Republic of the Congo (République démocratique du Congo in French) is the third largest country of Africa and it was formerly a Belgian colony - known as Zaire or Zaïre in French. Literally, Congo means a hunter, perhaps an apt description of the land and the people as traditionally hunting must be the main livelihood of the people. The word is derived from the Bakongo ethnic group, living in the Congo river basin. After gaining independence, it became the Republic of Congo. However, it changed its name to the Democratic Republic of (the) Congo to differentiate its name from the neighbouring country of the same name, Republic of Congo. The Democratic Republic of Congo shares its borders with the Central African Republic, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola. The Congo is situated at the heart of the west-central portion of sub-Saharan and has an equatorial location. The country experiences a rainfall of upward of 80 inches and has the second largest concentration of forests in the world, the first one being the forests around the Amazon River. The country also faces the highest frequency of thunderstorms in the world.
