Overview
Côte d'Ivoire (official name: the République de Côte d'Ivoire) is a country located in the western part of Africa. Translated into English, Cote d'Ivoire means the Ivory Coast, a name by which the country is better known in the English speaking world. It shares its borders with Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. Once the Ivory Coast was one of the most prosperous regions of Africa, but presently its position has been undermined due to political turmoil and conflicts.
Nothing is definitely known about the ancient history of Cote d'Ivoire until the arrival of the Portuguese in 1460s. Most of the population came to settle in the area from the neighbouring regions: Kru people came from Liberia around 1600; the Senoufo and Lobi people moved from Burkina Faso and Mali during the 18th-19th centuries; the Akan people moved from Ghana; and the Malinké people from Guinea.
