Overview
Bangalore, with a population of around 6.1 million (2006), is India's third largest city, and the fifth largest metropolitan area of India. The history of the city is traceable at least to a thousand year, though the recorded history of Bangalore begun with the establishment of a settlement in the year 1537 by Kempe Gowda I. Gowda build a mud fort and established it to serve as a post of the famous Vijayanagara Empire of the 15th century onwards until its decline by the mid-17th century. The city of Bangalore, however, continued to thrive and grow under the control of the successive rulers.
The city located an altitude of 920 m has a salubrious climate, and until very recently when the population grew very fast, the city was really a garden city, an epithet by which the city is still known. Presently, Bangalore is the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, and has emerged a preferred destination of many national and transnational Information Technology companies. At the same time, it is also a preferred destination for domestic and international tourists, and along side Chennai, a gateway to many exotic places of South India.
